The Making of....
Wilkinson
House
I received a lot of photos from the owner. There were a number of important components that the owner wanted to be included in her illustration: Ridgy, the adorable Golden Retriever, blooming flowers from her Mom's garden and Foxy the orange cat. The illustration will be a keepsake filled with memorable things. Requested house style: similar to my own/tippy-chubby.

Sketches
Some sketches are more complicated than others. This one required a lot of cutting and taping. First I drew the house, then the garden with Foxy and then I taped in Rigby. I still need to work out the details in the front door and bay window.

Tracing
Using a light table, I transferred the drawing onto the watercolor paper and tape the edges to keep them clean. I keep my sketches very simple. I prefer to add in all the detail with paints and Micron Pens.
I use Arches Rough 300lb paper. It's the best. It's so thick it doesn't warp and it has a very nice texture.

Initial Washes
This is the messy phase. I added all the major washes to the trees, house, roof, and lawn.
I can't stop a wash once I start otherwise the paint "blossoms" or blotches which is not ideal. This means I have to plan ahead where to start and keep in mind how complicated the shape is. It's best to do this when I know I won't be interrupted. No phone calls, no texts, no visits from the cat who suddenly decides she's lonely and wants attention.

More Washes....
Started in on the front façade, windows and door.
Once I get the second wash onto an area, I like to outline it with my Micron Pens and then paint it in like a coloring book. Window mullions are drawn with a white Gel Pen and then accented with pen.

Details
The house is coming along. I will concentrate on finishing the rest of the house before moving to the foreground. The whole front lawn and garden is covered with tracing paper to prevent accidents.

More Details....
Getting close to the finish line. I just have the garden, the trees on the right and a number of accents left to do. Oh and Foxy the orange cat! He's hiding in the garden somewhere.
